When buying a nutrient reservoir consider the following points:
● Material: Food grade plastic is best. It will not corrode and it is easy to attach fittings.
● Color: Ensure the plastic is black and/or opaque. This prevents light transmission and reflection which can destabilize chelated trace elements and encourage algae growth.
● Shape: It is easier to stir nutrient in a round reservoir compared to those that are rectangular or square.
● Lid: A reservoir lid is essential for preventing light and dirt ingress and to minimise evaporation. However, position the lid ~2 inches above the reservoir to allow aeration. Failure to do so will create a humid environment that will encourage the growth of fungus or moulds.
